LTO3 leads the way in the mid-range market

Tandberg Data, the leading European data storage company, today announces the launch of the new Tandberg 840LTO drive, based on LTO3 technology. With up to 400/800 GB being stored on an Ultrium3 cartridge, the new drive combines 100% more capacity than LTO2 with a transfer rate increased by a factor of 2.3 to 80/160 MB per second, the LTO3 drive is the leader in the mid-range market.

The potential of this product is huge. It incorporates a wealth of technical developments and is clearly leading the way in the mid-range market. The Tandberg 840LTO provides users with all the advantages of LTO3 technology and completes our range of LTO products, which now spread three generations, said Andrew Brown, UK sales manager at Tandberg Data. Companies are having to store more and more data and yet have shorter and shorter backup windows. We are providing a product that is not just responding to but answering market demand.

Our customers can rest assured that previous investments are secure. Backwards read and write compatibility with LTO2 ensures continuity of data management, while LTO1 media can also be read. Equally, with the LTO roadmap also having been extended to six system generations, future investments are also protected, Brown continued.

Despite boasting increased capacity and doubled speed, the power input is still less than that of the LTO2 drive and is the lowest in the LTO3 class. A buffer with 128 MB capacity and the digital speed adaptation optimise the data throughput, depending on the server output.

The Tandberg 840LTO features an LCD status display informing the administrator about important drive information. Detailed data about the operation and condition of the drive and media are logged internally and can be called up at any time.

The Tandberg 840LTO comes as an internal or external device and is available immediately for purchase via the usual distribution channels. The Ultrium3 cartridges, distributed under the Tandberg Data label, are also available now.

There will be LTO3-WORM cartridges available from the second quarter of this year for revision-proof data storage and archiving. On purchasing the new drive, Tandberg Data provides customers with a service hotline, training courses and a three-year guarantee including an advanced replacement service for the first year.
