Intermec Technologies has launched its range of RFID products in Europe. Ruggedised Intermec RFID products now available include the IF4 and IF5 fixed readers, the IP4 mobile reader and the PM4i intelligent printer.
RFID has become the most talked about technology in the Auto-ID community with media hype and high profile customer mandates from companies like METRO and Wal-Mart building a crescendo of interest. Intermec already has deep experience and expertise in applying RFID technology successfully in North America and is among the first companies here in Europe to offer a complete RFID solution.
Intermecs portfolio of tag, reader and printer hardware is manufactured to the latest ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) standards. It has also been and engineered to be fully upgradeable to emerging global RFID standards, such as EPCglobal UHF Generation 2 (or Gen 2). Companies investing today in Intermecs RFID readers and printers will be able to update to Gen 2 operation simply by means of firmware upgrades.
Commenting on Intermec Technologies RFID launch, Stuart Scott, EMEA director of marketing and business development said, As a global leader in RFID we know the areas where it can add value in Auto-ID applications and deliver a real return on investment primarily in supply chain applications. By working together with our RFID and technology alliance partners and specialist channel partners across EMEA, we have ensured our customers can now invest in fully integrated and scaleable RFID solutions today.
The new Intermec RFID products are compliant to ETSI radio standards for operation in Europe, both under the lower power 0.5W erp (EN300 220) standard and the newly established 2.0W erp (EN302 208) RFID standard. They all operate at UHF frequency between 867 and 869 MHz and feature a common architecture and present a consistent interface for ease of integration.
RFID allows companies to automatically track inventory throughout an entire supply chain. RFID automatic data collection does not require line of sight or manual scanning as do bar code-based systems. For example, information from RFID-tagged cases on a pallet can be read automatically as the entire load passes through a doorway, rather than requiring individual case bar code scanning. Intermecs Intellitag RFID technology adds the capability to change and update the information on each tag as it proceeds, providing new levels of up-to-date information for better decision-making.
