Secure Retail is introducing a new range of EMV and VISA PED approved secure card readers and keypads that meet the stringent environmental and security requirements for implementing chip-and-pin standards in kiosks, vending machines, ticketing machines and other unattended and hospitality point-of-sale applications.
The new devices - developed by SAGEM Denmark - offer substantial advantages for high-value purchases where transactions take place without a sales person being present, for example in ticket vending, car parking and petrol stations. Chip-and-PIN technology allows a high degree of security to be embodied in such machines, in particular meeting the standards demanded by credit card operators such as Visa and Mastercard. The Sagem solution is one of the first to gain EMV and VISA PED approval for the unattended market.
A prime consideration is the need to integrate the POS solution with other components of the application, such as the product delivery mechanisms in a vending machine. This achieved by offering OEMs separate modules for card reading and PIN entry. Fraud prevention is bolstered by secure encryption of the data transferred between keypad and card reader, as this is an integral requirement for pin security. The units also have tamper-resistant design with tamper-evident construction. Unauthorised access will result in all keys being deleted rendering the units useless. The units can be interchanged, card reader and PIN pad, should one become broken, but with the new encoding security between the card reader and PIN pad it ensures that the units can be paired, without compromising PIN security.
The encrypting PIN Pad with display is specifically designed for kiosk applications, featuring a robust stainless steel keypad with a clear, backlit graphical display. Options available include customised layouts and lettering, and customised graphics, allowing the appearance of the unit to be co-ordinated within the overall visual concept of the vending outlet. To help comply with DDA requirements, the keypad is available with tactile markings on the key 5, enter and clear keys. Sealed to IP65 the unit is equally suited to outdoor environments and hospitality applications.
Secure Retail is offering the SAGEMsecure card reader, a separate unit allowing the maximum flexibility in kiosk or vending machine layout and design. The card slot can be either vertical or horizontal. The reader supports both chip and magnetic stripe cards. All the new devices carry Visa PED certification and comply with emerging PCI specifications.
