IMS of Smithfield is a wholesale meat supplier of beef, pork, lamb, poultry, game and speciality products to the catering trade. Working within the provisions of all associated fresh meat and food hygiene standards, IMS have implemented stringent measures to ensure that health and hygiene are an integral part of their production and food management systems.
Working mainly with meat, in particular beef, any new changes in legislation impact heavily on IMSs production processes. At the height of the BSE scare, the government introduced very strict guidelines on the packaging and labelling of beef products, all beef products had to have complete traceability as to where the bovine was grown, slaughtered, cut, etc. Although the new guidelines were only required for beef products, and only where the goods were handled and packaged, with their varied range of products, IMS could be required to print over a 1000 labels a day.
With the requirement of 100% accuracy for meat traceability it was essential that IMS assessed their labelling needs and looked to a new solution that could be flexible and at the same time accurate.
IMS looked for a supplier that could provide the necessary tailored software with hardware from a well-established manufacturer. KTEC Technologies were selected due to their reputation as a complete solution provider, and a long-standing distributor of TOSHIBA TEC hardware, renowned for producing reliable high quality barcode printing products. KTEC proposed TOSHIBA TEC B-SX4T Industrial printers and software tailored to the exact requirements of the brief provided by IMS.
The new solution was compact, simple to use and produced accurate labels in a fraction of the time of the old system, enabling butchers to easily print their own labels containing all the required traceability information, by simply entering 7 or 8 keys and selecting from the preloaded options.
