Document Reduction Systems Ltd (DRS) has developed a new data capture capability, thanks to Dolphin 7400 mobile computers supplied by HHP, the worlds leading provider of image-based data collection systems. DRS originally purchased the Dolphins because it needed a quick and reliable way of capturing data from three million property deeds held by Network Rail.
As a specialist in space-saving document storage solutions, DRS were already helping Network Rail, which stores the deeds in a purpose-built Deed Centre. Network Rail asked DRS if it could capture specific data and implement a barcode tracking system from each of the documents.
DRS contacted Codeway, a data capture specialist and a Power Partner of HHP. DRS Sales Manager, Gemma Glen, says: Codeway were very helpful. They gave us some very useful ideas about how to tackle the project, and recommended the Dolphin 7400 as the best solution for our needs.
The Dolphin 7400 is a portable, hand held mobile computer that enables users to collect an unparalleled amount of data. It incorporates a Microsoft Windows CE 3.0 operating system and an Intel StrongArm processor, and is very easy to programme. It is available with three different keypad options, a VGA screen display, and an optional touchscreen.
DRS needed to capture seven pieces of information - some of which is quite detailed - from each deed. Codeway developed bespoke software that prompts the operators for each item. The barcodes on the documents can be scanned rapidly using the Dolphins. Other data are entered using either the Dolphins keypad or the touch screen.
Gemma continues: The Dolphin is very versatile and compact - its like having a miniature PC. Its large display screen enables operators to view the data being entered. The operators think theyre great, as theyre quick and easy to use. So far, they have given us 100% reliability. At the end of each day, we can download the data onto Network Rails database.
She concludes: Weve had great support from both Codeway and HHP throughout. We will definitely be using more HHP mobile computers in the future. They have effectively become part of our product range, which complements our existing services.
