DTR Business Systems (DTR), a leading value-added distributor of dependable technical solutions for resellers and vertical software developers found that many of its customers wanted to deploy network systems for legacy applications, during systems upgrade preparation and readiness for Y2K plus five. DTR looked to Digi for support and chose to use its PortServer TS Family of terminal servers, as it allowed their customers to network serial devices in legacy applications, was compatible with Linux OS, and offered a more cost-effective alternative to an entire systems overhaul.

The PortServer TS Family of terminal servers was specifically developed to connect legacy devices with serial ports to any TCP/IP Ethernet network, and provide customers with inherent data networking and proven asynchronous benefits, greatly reducing costs through leveraging their current hardware and software technology investments.

In addition, the PortServer terminals simplify the networking process by utilising an existing Ethernet infrastructure, and negating any requirement for separate wiring during installation. Offering support for between 2 to 64 serial port connections, the PortServer family enables customers to directly access and manage their devices at any time, through either a private intranet or the public Internet.

Through Digis experienced and responsive customer support team, DTR can easily manage and implement systems upgrades. The supportability of the Digi PortSever TS family makes the technology easier to install and maintain than a board inside a server. The products ability to seamlessly integrate with the Linux OS makes the product ideal for nearly any DTR customer.

DTR also utilises the PortServer TS Family of terminal servers to help small and medium-sized companies with old WAN technology to upgrade their remote office technology. DTR saves customers money by replacing older technology with newer technology like VPNs. The cost of this new equipment is quickly recovered from the savings on reduced phone lines. To help implement VPNs at remote sites, DTR installs a PortServer TS for serial devices in each office.

Capitalising on its relationship with Digi and Digis experience in device networking. DTR can now pass on significant cost savings to customers seeking systems upgrades, by providing them with a solution that avoids entire systems rewrites. Based on this value, Digi was selected as the preferred strategic vendor of DTR in 2004.

The final word on the benefit of Digis solution for its customers goes to Rene Beltran, executive vice president, DTR Business Systems who says, The Digi Port Server TS family of terminal servers provides the ideal solution for network-enabling legacy devices. The product family enables companies to easily and cost-effectively upgrade an IT infrastructure without the costs associated with a complete systems overhaul. Digi Internationals experienced technical support and sales staff, over-engineered product, and reputation as a market leader and premier brand in the UNIX world make it easy to provide outstanding value to our customers.
