SPECSAVERS SETS ITS SIGHTS ON HHPS IMAGETEAM 4600

HHP, the worlds leading provider of image-based data collection systems, has won a major contract with Specsavers Optical Group Limited for a minimum of 3,000 IMAGETEAM 4600 handheld scanners. These will be phased in over a three-year period, and will be used throughout all the key areas of the companys retail practices.

Specsavers Optical Group Limited has over 600 stores in the UK, Ireland, Sweden and the Netherlands. It is the UKs leading optician, with a 30% market share, and it has over 16 million registered customers. In 2003 alone, Specsavers sold six million spectacle frames. The company recently decided to research alternative hardware for its barcode scanning system and discovered HHPs products while conducting an Internet search. Following detailed discussions and tests, the company selected the IMAGETEAM 4600.

The IT4600 is a retail and commercial grade area imager - a feature-rich model with omni-directional reading capabilities, making data collection quick and easy. It incorporates HHPs sophisticated miniature image engine, which has been designed to provide improved performance at a reduced cost.

The PDF version of the scanner reads postal, linear and PDF codes.

John Stokes, Stores Systems Consultant for Specsavers Optical Group, says: The IMAGETEAM 4600 has a very good and aggressive scan engine. We use micro PDF barcodes on our spectacle frames, so it is ideal. We evaluated the unit and it gave an extremely good first time read rate. I am very impressed by its configurability, design and ease of use - as well as its attractive price! The clinching factor was its ability to plug and play in Linux as well as Microsoft Windows.

The HHP scanners will primarily be used at the point of sale in Specsavers stores. They will ultimately also be used in the sight test rooms, the in-store labs, contact lens areas and at dispensing points. John Stokes concludes: We now have a very cost-effective, accurate and efficient scanner, which is fast and can be operated hands-free - and we are now starting to ship it out to all of our stores.
