JJB selects Alphameric for substantial EPoS replacement

JJB, the UKs largest sports retailer, has selected leading retail solutions provider, Alphameric, for the replacement of its entire EPoS estate with the new Hewlett Packard (HP) rp5000 base unit and Alphamerics Microsoft Windows-based, Chip & PIN enabled EPoS solution. The implementation will enable JJB to convert fully to Windows by 2005.

Led by the need to adopt Chip & PIN, JJB evaluated potential suppliers and selected Alphameric on the basis of ease of integration into all existing stock and financial packages, functionality, future proofing and cost effectiveness. Alphameric will provide JJB with state of the art infrastructure, including real time sales data from all stores, complete automation of current workflow administration functions and the latest Chip & PIN capability. Alphameric is also the first HP partner to incorporate the latest base units into its solution.

The Alphameric solution will enable JJBs retail store managers to access vital stock information, normally held at head office, for faster, more effective decision making at store level. JJB will benefit from the user-friendly Windows environment, ensuring fast transaction processing and communication with head office at the touch of a button.

The replacement of the 1600 EPoS terminals and associated solutions in JJBs 447 stores will be completed in stages and overseen by Alphameric. Phase one, due by October 2004, will include the re-cabling of all stores, replacing all current hardware, ensuring Chip & PIN compliance and the installation of WAN (wide area network). Phase two, also due in October, will be the trial of the new Windows-based software and phase three will be the complete roll out of the new software.

Mark Macaulay, IT Director, JJB, comments, "Over our 19-year relationship with Alphameric we have always tried to keep at the forefront of development. This project will see us able to fully integrate our systems, benefiting from the latest technology and ensuring we are in a strong position to implement future changes in technology."

Dominic Webb, Product Manager, Hewlett Packard, comments, "We see retail as a major growth sector and Alphameric synchronises well with the HP channel strategy. They are focused, specialist vendors, great to work with and well respected in the marketplace."
