Computerised conductors increased productivity and reduce costs
November 11, 2008
A good example for ‘hot applications’ in mobile computing is the Swedish National Rail system which carries more than 19 million people annually.
They recently implemented what Christer Kohler describes as “the first computerised conductors in the world” equipped with hand-held computers and portable printers with integrated magnetic card reader. IrDA wireless communication between the two devices means no cables to break! Passengers now pay on the train rather than at rail stations.
Slovakian Rail is another good example of mobile printing in transportation. Tickets are issued in trains by entering data into hand-held computers. The software calculates the fare and tickets are automatically printed via a Bluetooth connection to the Extech printer.
Similar systems are at work on buses in Germany and Norway and on Cross Channel Ferries as well as on Finnair for duty free receipts.
