Virtual technology approach reduces IT costs
December 17, 2008

Amid the current financial uncertainty and looming economic slowdown, companies across the UK have no choice but to consider smarter ways to operate, according to Ian Readman, chief executive of Intercept IT.

As pressure grows on IT managers and chief information officers (CIOs) to scrutinise budgets and technology expenditure, one option reaping benefits for UK companies of all sizes is Cloud Computing.

“With the recent spiralling financial situation across global markets, Cloud Computing should be considered as a way of driving down IT costs whilst also improving reliability and user experience,” says Ian Readman.

“For larger firms this approach can be used to centralise, virtualise and optimise their own corporate datacentres, or SME’s may look to outsource their complete IT to a specialist virtual IT provider.

In essence this means any company of any size can create a flexible IT infrastructure.  If companies have the ability to harness the power of technology they will improve IT expenditure, quality of service and agility.

Intercept has already helped many organisations adopt a Cloud Computing approach and to great affect.  Insurance Law firm ‘Kennedys’ worked with Intercept to virtualise its IT, that has now delivered savings in excess of £350,000 per annum. They will be presenting a showcase of their learnings at the firms Global HQ in Fenchurch Street on Friday, 21 November.

Rowanmoor Pensions, a leader in the self-administered pensions industry, implemented an Intercept virtual IT ‘cloud’ which is saving the organisation around £200,000 per annum.

“It’s no surprise that benchmark companies like Kennedys and Rowanmoor are leading the way.  The real beauty of Cloud Computing and virtualisation technology as a whole is that it can be shaped and adapted to suit the specific need of the customer.

Other industries with potential to reduce operating costs are companies with sales teams working remotely.

“Staff working away from the office will have the ability to access the company server and information just the same as they would if they were in the office.  This has huge potential to offer savings at a time when tight budgets are absolutely paramount”.

“Part of the challenges that IT managers and CIOs face are the consequences of the physical boundaries of equipment and workloads.  With a Cloud Computing approach, these challenges are not only dealt with, but offer cost savings with a real impact.

“We calculate that by virtualising our clients IT, we’ve saved them on average more than one million pounds annually on energy costs and over seven million on hardware,” added Readman.
