Heineken streamlines distribution process with HHP's Dolphin mobile computers
04 May 2004
The Dutch Heineken brewery has streamlined its distribution process by equipping all of its trucks with Dolphin® 7200 mobile computers from HHP, a leading provider of image-based data collection solutions. The new system has already resulted in significant cost savings.
Every day, a fleet of 320 trucks transport Heineken's products, which include beers, associated drinks and soft drinks, from the various Dutch distribution centres to points of sale. Thanks to the multifunctional HHP Dolphin® 7200 mobile computers, drivers can now get access to product information, delivery details and details of returned goods by simply scanning the bar code. A printer linked to the terminal is also used to provide customers with a printed receipt.
Before the implementation of the new system, collecting the data was a time consuming process. Drivers had to fill out all paperwork by hand, including the detailed delivery receipts. At the end of the day, all data was entered into the central system by Heineken's administrative staff at the distribution centres.
Heineken’s new solution needed to be faster, more reliable and more efficient, and integrate seamlessly with Heineken’s existing administrative and logistical software. HHP partner ZETES helped Heineken select the ultimate solution. After extensive research, the two companies selected HHP's Dolphin® 7200 mobile computers.
"The search took quite some time, because few suppliers could provide both the equipment and software we wanted in the configuration we required," said Fred Klein Hemmink, logistics manager at Heineken.
"The new system not only simplifies Heineken’s logistical administration, but also ensures that input errors are minimised. In addition the system provides valuable distribution management information that can be used to plan the delivery routes more effectively," said Boudewijn van der Kroon, director business development strategic EMEA accounts at HHP. "This has already led to substantial time and cost savings and will continue to prove its worth. If Heineken wants to switch to a new stock management system in the future, this solution can be incorporated seamlessly."
