Kofax announces new release of its award-winning VirtualReScan software
 April 25, 2008

Kofax plc, a leading provider of Intelligent Capture & Exchange solutions, has announced a new release of its VirtualReScan (VRS) software.

VRS 4.2 Professional includes innovative scanning and image enhancement features designed to help enterprises reduce the cost and improve the efficiency of their digital imaging operations.

VRS 4.2 Professional’s new Desktop Productivity feature enables workers to scan, correct, save and distribute documents directly from within popular e-mail programs, thereby eliminating the time-consuming need to switch to separate scanning applications. With its “Fast Scan” feature, VRS 4.2 Professional makes scanning, image enhancement, file naming and attachment a one-step process, converting images into small, high-quality Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files that are ready for immediate distribution.

VRS improves the accuracy of data captured from scanned documents that are processed by intelligent character recognition (ICR) and optical character recognition (OCR) technology, significantly reducing the need for manual corrections. VRS performs a real-time, multi-point inspection of the images created as documents pass through a scanner, identifying and correcting any impairments that could impact ICR’s and OCR’s ability to read them correctly.

VRS 4.2 Professional further improves upon the Advanced Clarity feature introduced in VRS 4.1 Professional, which can resurrect legible images from documents previously considered impossible to scan. Advanced Clarity can convert difficult source material – schematics, checks and other documents with dense, textured backgrounds – into crisp, clear images for faster, more accurate processing.

“Numerous enterprise organizations rely on data captured from scanned documents for their daily operations, so the importance of having high-quality, accurate images to work with is a top priority for our customers,” said Sameer Samat, Executive Vice President of Products at Kofax. “And with the introduction of VRS 4.2 Professional, we take scanning productivity to the next level by enabling them to scan, enhance and distribute images without ever leaving their e-mail programs, which greatly improves the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of business operations.”

VRS 4.2 Professional also includes an improved Auto-Orientation feature, which relieves users of the burden of manually turning pages to the same orientation prior to scanning. This is especially valuable in high-volume operations, as it reduces time-consuming document pre-scan procedures.

“In many enterprise environments, where thousands–even millions–of documents are scanned each day, the time savings VRS 4.2 Professional provides can add up to huge increases in productivity,” continued Samat.

Since its introduction in 1998, VRS has become a de facto standard for scanning productivity, with hundreds of thousands of copies in use worldwide. Every major manufacturer of business-class scanners, including Böwe Bell + Howell, Canon, Epson, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, Kodak, Panasonic, Ricoh, Visioneer and Xerox, has released VRS-certified models. Several have elected to bundle VRS with their products, to improve the out-of-the-box scanning experience for their customers.

Additional improvements to VRS 4.2 Professional include enhanced TWAIN compatibility, Windows Vista 64-bit support, and an expanded list of supported image storage and compression formats.

VRS 4.2 Professional is shipping now.
