Konica Minolta magicolor 5450 colour laser printer: best-in-its-class performance and TCO

Konica Minolta Printing Solutions UK is introducing the magicolor® 5450 colour laser printer. The PostScript 3 and PCL 6 printer languages make this fast network colour printer suitable for every environment and guarantee sharp prints of text and graphics, as well as full-colour images. High quality does not mean that the printer compromises on printing speed: 25 A4 pages per minute in monochrome as well as in colour.

The magicolor 5450 is a high-end colour and monochrome PostScript/PCL printer enabling printing from virtually every application (including DOS and SAP applications) and in all major environments (Windows®, Mac® OS, Linux® and Citrix® Metaframe®).

Koby Amedume, Head of Marketing for Konica Minolta Printing Solutions UK: ‘With the magicolor 5450, users acquire a versatile tool offering sublime quality in monochrome and colour – at the low cost of a monochrome laser printer, in terms of both the purchase price for the printer and the print cost per page. Moreover the machine has everything to offer that you might expect from a top model in the high-end class - and more.

The new printer is especially suitable for medium-sized workgroups and capable of handling the most demanding printer tasks. The magicolor 5450 has a G4 processor at 667 MHz, a gigabit Ethernet network card, a big internal memory of 256 MB and a USB 2.0 interface. It also executes the smallest print jobs rapidly: thanks to its extremely short warm-up time, the first page appears in the output tray after just 14 seconds. The high printing speed is maintained after the first page for both monochrome and full-colour print jobs.

“Speed and reliability are very important in demanding workgroups. Organisations therefore often opt for monochrome laser printers, sometimes using a separate printer for colour.  The magicolor 5450 has it all, at high speed and the lowest possible operational cost,” explains Amedume. “Colour printing is an extra facility whose importance is becoming increasingly clear to professionals.”

Quality
Compared to the existing models in the magicolor 5400 series, the print quality of the magicolor 5450 has been improved even further. In addition to the polymer toner technology developed by Konica Minolta, which ensures extremely well distributed, uniform and excellent sharp toner placement, the magicolor 5450 comes equipped with the new Emperon controller. This feature in combination with printer languages PostScript 3 and PCL 6 guarantees sharp images at high speed.

Photo ART™ Contone
The magicolor 5450’s resolution is 600x600x4 dpi, with the ‘4’ being significant. It means that the printer uses ‘continuous tone’ or contone. Traditional printing techniques create a specific colour by using a number of halftone ‘pixels’. Photo ART™ contone means that each individual pixel is built up of four “layers”.  The number of colour variations per pixel is multiplied by four. The result: a more detailed image which does much better justice to even very small colour variations and colour gradients.

Always optimal
The enhanced Automatic Image Density Control (eAIDC) ensures that all printing parameters of the magicolor 5450 are optimally matched - even during long-term intensive use. If the properties of the photo drum and toner cartridges are changed, the relevant printing parameters are adjusted automatically. The eAIDC uses sophisticated test patterns, which are tested very quickly. The machine then calculates whether the actual density still complies with the factory specifications.

Easy
The magicolor 5450’s ease of use begins with the illuminated display, which is easy to read in all lighting conditions. Moreover the printer is supplied ‘ready to use’, with all consumables installed in advance. Another practical feature is that the consumables (the waste-toner cartridge and four separate imaging cartridges) are accessible from the front of the printer, so they are easy to replace quickly.

The 500-sheet feeder tray is equipped with a level indicator on the front. The printer also has a so-called multi-purpose feeder tray. This allows the user to insert different print media, such as transparencies, envelopes or special paper types, for specific print jobs without having to change the content of the other feeder trays.

The standard paper capacity can be expanded with one or two extra feeder trays to a maximum of 1600 sheets. The standard and extra feeder trays can be controlled separately, so that users can select the right paper – with or without corporate logo, for instance – at their workstation.

Versatile
The magicolor 5450 produces sharp prints on a wide range of print media, including regular (copy) paper, recycled paper, luxury paper types, transparencies, labels, glossy paper and envelopes, with a maximum paper weight of 210 g/m2. Therefore, organisations can produce in-house, professional publications with full-colour covers for reports, tenders and specifications ‘on demand’. Furthermore the printer can be equipped with an optional unit for automatic double-sided printing.

PictBridge*
PictBridge-compliant digital cameras – a commonly accepted global standard – can be directly connected to the magicolor 5450. Photos can then be printed for inclusion in tenders, reports or newsletters without a PC being required. The system offers simple editing options, such as rotation, automatic adjustment of print size, and printing N-up (multiple photos on a single page). Users can also specify the number of copies required or print an overview of all photos in thumbnail format.

Management
The configuration of the new printer can be modified from every PC connected to the device. The network administrator can control access to vital functions with the aid of a password.

Price, warranty and availability
The magicolor 5450 colour laser printer will be available on the market immediately. Its recommended retail price is £1169,- exclusive of VAT. The printer is supplied ‘ready to use’, including a pre-installed set of consumables. The toner cartridges for black, cyan, magenta and yellow can be replaced individually with cartridges with a print capacity of 6,000 or 12,000 pages, respectively (on average). The printer has an on-site warranty of one year that can be expanded to a maximum of 5 years.

* Please note that the PictBridge port of the first units of magicolor 5450 will not be functional. A free software update will be made available shortly for download on the Konica Minolta website.
