Intermec launches plug-and-play solution for wireless Bluetooth scanners
November 03, 2009

Intermec have announced the launch of the SD61, a multiport wireless base station that provides a secure connection (ISCP protocol) between multiple Intermec industrial scanners – including the SF51 and SR61B, and the host device.

The SD61 allows up to seven Intermec Bluetooth®-equipped scanners to operate in the same work area, connected wirelessly to the same mobile cart solution, PC or Intermec printer.

By reducing the number of hosts, the SD61 delivers a quick ROI and a less cluttered work environment. The communication between the SD61 and associated scanners is bi-directional, ensuring that data transfers are secure and validated. Additionally, the Bluetooth®™ Class 1 radio allows any SD61 user to work within a radius of up to 100m (328ft) from the base in open air. Users that go out of range from the base station are informed visually – by Intermec’s Ready-to-Work light – and by audio messages provided by the SF51 or SR61 scanners.

Once users re-enter range they automatically re-connect to the system. The SD61 provides maximum flexibility, reliability and durability by enabling each wireless scanner associated with it to run independently with specific configurations. The first-time configuration process with the SD61 is simplified by reading barcodes that accompany the base station or on-line through Intermec’s EasySet configuration software, which also provides extensive data editing tools. Furthermore, it was designed with harsh environments – like warehouse and industrial production sites – in mind, and can withstand up to 26 drops to concrete from four feet. “Intermec’s SD61 reduces downtime and the need to contact system administrators by allowing line managers and individual users to associate scanners to the system without having to gain access to the host computer,” said David Downey, GM of Intermec Data Capture Operations. “Wireless scanners can be connected and disconnected by simply reading the association barcode on top of the SD61 – alleviating the need for additional dongles or software downloads, which can be a headache for users.” The SD61 can be backed by optional Intermec Medallion® Complete Service.
